The following training session took place at Busch Stadium on May 22. The session was delivered by Rafael Benitez the night before Chelsea played Manchester City in St. Louis, Missouri. The session lasted one hour and incorporated several of the ideas Benitez was looking to incorporate the following night in the game against Manchester City. Mourinho’s global method is similar to what is referred to in the US coaching schools as economical training. This implies that the coach incorporates all four components of soccer into every activity; technical, tactical,
physical and psychological. Rather than focusing on just one of these components Mourinho applies each component to every activity he carries out with his teams. The prominent formation over the last several years has been 4.2.3.1 or an altered version; 4.3.2.1, 4.1.3.2, 4.2.3.1, etc. Italy, and teams in Serie A continue to push the tactical envelope. NSCAA Soccer Journal editor, Dr. Jay Martin, reviewed over 500 articles and training sessions for inclusion in the special Preseason Edition of the NSCAA Soccer Journal. 30 articles, interviews, and training sessions were presented and distributed to NSCAA members. As an emerging technician, one must dig deeper to understand the subtle nuances that make Barcelona so good. One must research how and why players move in the manner they do and how this movement affects each teammate.
