This session was presented at the May 22 coaching clinic. ASET would like to thank the Avalon U13 boys coached by Jim Reynolds for acting as the demonstration group. Holding possession from the middle third to the final third is always difficult as there is less space in which to operate. This session will focus on the movement of the midfielders and forward to not only keep possession but get behind the opposition defense.

This full training session focuses on the ability of the back four to defend balls crossed into the penalty area and then step up to effectively press the opposition forward and midfielders. The session examines players responsibilities when defending serves into the penalty box and how they should function as a group once the ball is cleared out of the penalty box.

At the 2009 NSCAA convention, Dick Bate presented a session titled "Modern Possession". As teams improve their transition and quickly set up within a block to defend, there has been an emphasis on maintaining possession in order to break through or around the block. This session focused on player's ability to always play forward rather than make square or back passes.

This session was presented at the March 27 coaching clinic. The demonstration group was the U17 boys from the St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club. This session demonstrated central midfield roles and responsibilities in order for teams to guard against the counter-attack. During each activity, the responsibilities of central midfielders was addressed on both sides of the ball. In the modern game positions have become more specialized and the majority of central midfielders are now viewed as either attacking or holding midfielders. This session specifically addressed the attacking and defending skills required of the modern holding midfielder.
